Two videos today – one serious, one kind of fun – related to some of the day’s news. Click on the YouTube.com logo below to have a look.

The first is a serious reflection by a professor from Johns Hopkins on the general topic of Electronic Voting machines. Perhaps some listener will be able to explain why these are not open source machines, by definition. There are enough pools of deep knowledge on both sides of the political spectrum to make sure that the other party does not pull any shady moves. This is just the sort of situation where the security of closed systems is bound to be in question. The Australians did it right, according to Wired Magazine . And, it took them all of six months from publishing the specification to shipping units. That was three years ago. An interesting question for your congress critter.

The second video is a fun one from the official Segway site – a five minute infomercial on everyone’s favorite cool device that you just can’t justify. Even in your own mind, much less defend in the kitchen table contest with your spouse. I had sort of lost touch with Segways, and now there appear to be offroad models, tricked out golf-course editions, and some beefy upgrades. Equivalent mileage of 450 MPG, and some XT off road models being fire-saled at Sam’s Club Warehouse (On-line) this past weekend for $3888.00 .

There is a Segway enthusiast site at theinfokey.com -and a recurring theme that has resurfaced again at BusinessWeek. . Perhaps the most interesting comment there is an observation” If the Segway has the capability (between battery and motors) to haul a 250 lb person for 24 miles, how much do you have to sacrifice to add two more wheels ?
