Network Neutrality: Two Sites of Note
    by Andrew McCaskey

Today’s comments are mostly courtesy of a listener – first name Kal – who offered up an email with some much appreciated comments, plus a pointer to a Mac oriented site that I was not familiar with – Tidbits at www.tidbits.com .

Kal offered a comment or two on the issue of “Net Neutrality”, and suggested that the editors at Tidbits had a good balanced perspective.

It’s a polarizing issue – and it’s gone to the realm of K Street Lobbyists with a battle between the established telcos and carriers and providers of content large and small. You can be sure that the true interests of the consumer, and the innovation that occurs at the edge are in danger of being finely ground finely between the slowly moving massive stones.

The essay at TidBits points out that there have always been inequities in internet access in matters of reliability, bandwidth, firewalls, whitelist, blacklist. What has been true, historically, is that once these factors are incorporated, the network does try, on a best efforts basis, to move that packet along once it hits the network, on an egalitarian basis. Historically, the “dumb fast” network that moves things along has, in the balance allowed the intelligence at the edges to sort things out, and more importantly figure out new ways to sort things out in a way that would never occur in a centrally administered “intelligent network”.

The other side of the coin is that the Telcos have incredible investment in fiber plant and equipment – Billions of dollars – and deserve a way to maximize their return on that investment. Some might point out that the 30 year depreciation schedules they enjoyed in the regulated rate base might be a bit out of date – and a 30 month business model might be more realistic, but the fact remains that VoIP pressures are hollowing out their core business and the TV and movie industries are not going to give up their growth vectors without a fight.

TidBits has pointers to what they term the “propoganda sites” for both sides, namely

    http://www.handsoff.org

    http://www.savetheinternet.com

I think you will enjoy a look at both sides of the issue.
