If you are a new listener, you may not have heard about the contest that’s being conducted by the Techpodcast Network, along with U3, one of the pioneers in “portable applications” that run on a USB thumb drive.

I first had a chance to see one of these devices at the CES show in January, and they are impressive. The idea is that you have your applications, data, preferences, music, player, password and presentations on a USB drive – maybe one of the drives sold at Best Buy under the Geek Squad name, or from some other major manufacturer such as SanDisk. Instead of hauling your laptop along, all you need to take along is the drive, maybe on your keychain, and one of the cellphone style combos of earphone and dangling mic or music player earbuds. Easily fits into a pocket.

Then, wherever you find a Windows machine that is net connected – you have your office with you, including Skype / Skype Out. Hotel lobby, library, internet cafe. And, when you pop the drive out, there is nothing left behind – not even a registry entry.

U3 is offering $850 in prizes to the best apps in each category- office, utilities and games, TPN listeners who download the U3 Developer’s Kit, register by email at contest@techpodcasts.com and then submit their application before the contest deadline.

In other matters, I found an interesting site this evening: Instructables.com . If you enjoy Make Magazine, you will find this to be a worthwhile and fun stop for all sorts of useful , foolish and useful foolishness things that you can make, with step by step photos and instructions. The practical garage wall wooden bike racks are complemented by the $33 light saber, the $15 version of the $200 pen, and a 3D printer made from Legos that prints on chocolate.

Just the thing for the weekend.
