Last of the Faxes

–by Andrew McCaskey
I have to make mention of a day job situation that may give some of us real pause. It was not that unusual, other than the fact that a colleague in India called me on Skype which rolled over to my personal cellphone. She had a unique problem. It seemed that we needed a nondisclosure statement from an individual, and being new to the organization she asked me the procedure. We both realized that with signature requirements that we needed to generate the document, fax it to the party in the UK, and then get it signed at the home office, then back to the UK.
The problem came – finding anyone who was still using fax machines. We quickly identified who needed to sign, found them to be on vacation and neither of us could identify where in the home office the fax would land, nearby to someone who was physically in the office. i.e. not working from a home office or customer location that day. We could get the fax in electronic form, but then the difficulty was getting the return signature.
A few minutes later we had IM’d a few colleagues and established who was where, who was in, and who would sign. We then proceeded to get the job done using a tool that had it’s zenith maybe 15 years ago, and is rapidly becoming obsolete. First, finding one, second finding one turned on that did not have the ink cartridge gummed up and dried from disuse.
What was significant was that the transaction was handled more speedily outside the ‘normal’ communication channels instead of the official company provided networks, and like water flowing downhill, sought its own path.
The velocity of business – for good or ill – has taken another turn, and if you want to fax something, you better do it quick. Before it’s too late.
