Some of the long term listeners to the podcast will recall that I have often used the words “kindness of strangers” in thanks to a number of listeners who help keep things running behind the scenes. I had a graphic demonstration once again today, when the day began with some indication on the Libsyn primary feed that all was not well. The uptake normally has a high proportion of iTunes listeners in the stats, and while downloads were progressing from other clients, it was clear that iTunes was unhappy.

This sort of thing immediately gets referred to my weekend co-host and PHP Zend master Annette Thomson – but she was in the midst of her own day job obligations and it was clear that I was going to be on my own. The confounding factor was that I had, co-incidentally made a change earlier yesterday for a new GoToMeeting banner ad, disturbing the Wordpress code in ways that I can mimic, if not fully understand. So, I thought that the problem was related to that issue in some way, and went down the garden path.

I suspected some simple issue, and around mid morning, I had stripped out the formatting from the post, and re-issued a second post revision. Same feed validator errors, just different places. Now it was getting interesting.

All was revealed in an email from Roger Linder, a listener in CA who not only spotted the offending dangling tag in the posting, but helped explain – since I had not removed the previous post – why the error in the feed kept shifting. Saved the day. quite literally.

A little later today, Joseph Zitt wrote in saying that the id3 tag “Artist” is blank, making it hard with some tools. I have been using Winamp to manually edit the tags for the file since 2004 – so the mystery deepens. But if one listener is having problems, you can bet others are as well.

Larry Lacost has helped on several occasions with microphone and audio tips – and contacted a manufacturer to plead the case, then send along a pop screen.

And, behind the scenes listener Dwight Illk has been monitoring and assisting Peter Yorke at DownloadRadio.org keeping the bittorrent feed running, which has, of late, been growing at a suprising rate.

That’s four examples of dedicated SDR listeners that help keep the podcast going. And there are others as well.

All I can say is thanks for listening, and offering the helping hand.
