Local Motors or Loco Motors ?
by Andrew McCaskey
Open Mind – Open Source
Jeff Jarvis has a blog entry on the combination of the leanest of manufacturing, open source supply, crowdsourcing and social networking of customer evangelists in a Boston startup called Local Motors. It might just work.
It combines the fundamentals of an open API, with designs and a lean team of 41 people who will allow customers to design their car online from a predetermined set of plans and parts – and then, over two weekends, assemble the car at a micro-factory in their own home town. It’s sort of a “Build a Bear” for automobiles.
The company provides the purchasing and financing clout, and most importantly, the designs are available only on a local basis, engineered by the community for local conditions. Most importantly, it’s small, collaborative and flexible.
This needs some looking into. It might be crazy, but we have done the monster motorcar for close to 100 years. Maybe the other extreme has some value.
