Challenge Assumptions
Being immersed in the world of computing and communications systems, it’s easy to forget that all things change. And even our assumptions are on that list, about what is communicated, as well as how that communication occurs. Google’s Wave – a collaborative workspace that combines elements of email, wikis, instant messenger and on-line whiteboard is the latest portion of the Reset. The assumption that transforming the distribution or transport of information by using modern telecommunications continues to validate the underlying models of message to receiver with fixed time relationships, immutable content, privacy and geographic factors intact may not be valid.
Two recent items have captured a major portion of the financial troubles for newspapers: Classified advertising going online to Craigslist, and most recently, noting that the other shoe has dropped in that many government entities are beginning to provide publication of “Official Notices” online on their web pages in addition to – and in some cases as a replacement for the pages of micro-sized print on ordinances,tax delinquencies, lost property, auction notices, foreclosures, police blotter, real estate transactions and all manner of matters “in the public record”.
It’s not been all that long, in the scheme of things, since the Town Crier had those responsibilities. And that analog communications system has been superseded. Google Wave may not be the form that will emerge, but at least there is some thought going on about what exactly is being communicated, as opposed to how that is happening.
