Social Fresh – Tampa

I spent the day at the Social Fresh conference in Tampa Florida. Social Fresh is a social media conference that is designed for smaller markets such as Nashville, Tampa and Portland that don’t attract the big conference audience numbers of cities lke Boston, New York and the Bay area.

As soon as I get back to the Midwest, I’ll add some of the videos from today’s session to the events tab and also begin to forward through the media feed. Right now the hotel bandwidth and EVDO are not cooperating – and unfortunately no WiMax here in Tampa.

Two of the keynote sessions captured – scaling social media and a second on Private Social NEtworks,as well as an introduction to the excellent Hubspot series.

Tour of the Studio

Those subscribed to the SDRNews Special Media RSS feed got a private tour of the new Studio – that is going to be the origination point for the TPN Lineup and several other shows that are destined for Techpodcasts.tv.

The new system is a two channel Skype terminal, with mix-minus audio and two streaming feeds – one on uStream and the other an experimental peer to peer feed on Dyyno.com.

Improved Media Feed

The SDRNEws Special Media Feeds will continue – and will contain material that may or may not be published elsewhere. Today’s special media feed for example – includes a ten page pdf white paper on the general subject of Netneutrality. From time to time, I will be able to send along materials that are of special interest or relevance to the regular news items that we cover on the show.

In the next couple of days, be on the lookout for some backchannel video on the Special Media Feed, showing the details of the preparation for launch of a new TPN video podcast.

And if you are available at 4:00PM Eastern Friday February 5th, please go to uStream and search for Bageltech, bagel – I will be joining Ewen Rankin live in the UK and we will be discussing some of the tech stories this week.

Also, there may be some video testing on the SDRNews Dyyno distribution system – the system that we found at CES that is a peer to peer video system that reportedly scales up to 100k users. I don’t expect that many but watch Twitter axmc for program announcements, probably Saturday morning Eastern, or later in the evening Saturday night.

Techpodcasts.tv Opens Up

Things are starting to heat up at Techpodcasts.tv . One of the big projects that emerged from the CES coverage was trying to develop central location that would permit easy distribution of shows produced by TPN members so that they could be gathered and viewed on the Roku and similar boxes.

The result is Techpodcasts.tv . The word went out this evening and in the weeks to come you will begin to see several dedicated channels appear as sections or categories on the site.

The SDRNEws Special Media Feeds will continue – and will contain material that may or may not be published elsewhere. Today’s special media feed for example – includes a ten page pdf white paper on the general subject of Netneutrality. From time to time, I will be able to send along materials that are of special interest or relevance to the regular news items that we cover on the show.

One of the videos today was from a company called SmartFish- with an Ergo Motion Keyboard – an Interview with Todd Cochrane at Digital Experience, prior to CES.

the keyboard itself is segmented in two, and is programmed to reconfigure itself periodically.

The iPad Caps It Off – What’s Next ?

If anyone is doubting that there are tablet computing as a form factor in their future, you might want to consider that you have two out of the big three with clear device plans already announced, and the Microsoft world moving rapidly in the direction, as well – although in not quite so elegant a manner.

O’Reilly and a number of others have noted the passing of the “hacker” phase of computing – noting that the good old days are rapidly coming to an end. The analogy they drew was right out of the automobile business – which until the 1970’s were part and parcel of the shade tree mechanic – with the ability to learn by doing, tearing apart and replacing and repairing – a direct unbroken line of tinkerers stretching back to the beginnings of the automobile eighty years before.

The Techcrunch Article said ” the iPad is the computer for my Mom – the first where the end user will not be concerned about OS updates, grabbing the right drivers, editing a config file or some such task.

THose of us who have spent the few decades in the middle of all this – flipping bits in S100 days, or stories of the 4-400’s run ‘em red and talk ‘em white might find it hard to fathom – but that value prop is a lot more attractive to a lot more people than the things we have found valuable and challenging.

A lot of people have strived to get to this point for a long time. Now that it’s almost here.. what’s the next big thing ? It’s going to have to be huge to beat the last two.

The tiny Singapore based company that is getting ready to roll the dice on what was formerly known as the Crunch Pad is going to have a very, very long shot.

As the recent viral video shows, sometimes a blindfold shot from mid court can make the basket, but the probability of that happening is pretty remote. It’s going to be the same for the JooJoo Pad or any of a score of potential contenders.

They are up against an ecosystem. And that ecosystem’s head start is measured in years and well over 100,000 apps that are already in the public’s mind. They are up against a distribution system that is approachable and manageable by non-techies.

And most importantly, they are up against a cultural “There’s an App for That” supported by a the most powerful marketing force on the planet – that has the chops to engage with traditional content providers of all forms.

Unless they are going to compete on price – lets say a 50% of the price or less – it is going to be a long row to hoe. Indeed.

They are rolled before they get started rolling – unless they are very, very clever.

iPad Camera ? iPass

Even though there are apparently hooks in the iPad SDK for a fairly sophisticated camera app- the initial decision to omit a camera is probably a pretty good one.

First of all, the size of the iPad makes it too big to be handy – like the iPhone, and more importantly, very hard to hold still for either still or video photography. The trusty combination of size, weight, and lens quality of the Single Lens Reflex camera will insure that the SLR is not going out of fashion any time soon.

One of the aggravations of a laptop web cam has been getting the camera focused and pointed the right way for Skype or similar video conference . Without a means of elevating the laptop -especially in a hotel room – getting the camera angle away from nostril gazing, and still retaining the ability to read the screen is a juggling act at best.

On the other hand, at least the laptop has a bottom and a hinge – two axis stabilization at least. The iPad would offer none – unless you wanted the peeking in the aquarium look. iPass.

Start of the TPN Lineup Show

Just turned up the first post for a new show – this one the first regular video production from SDR News – that will not be event related.

The new show is called TPN Lineup – your chance to become better acquainted with the member shows of the Tech Podcast Network, and the people who bring those shows to you.

Since its founding in 2005, the Tech Podcast Network has served as a co-operative venture, forum, training and business center for a group of technology oriented podcasters who agree to create educational content, and present it in a family safe manner for general consumption.

IPad’s Flash and Small Businesses

What’s the iPad going to do to websites that are adding video ? It’s going to be a technical scramble to figure out how to support video to the iPad when Apple refuses to implement Adobe Flash on the new device. And it looks like there is not going to be Flash support any time soon, even though SDRNews is beginning to emphasize video content as well as the realtime web through Twitter.

You have got to believe that there are some developers scrambling to provide an alternative to Flash based sites – and that there are some, like SDRNews who had some new designs in the works that are being looked at very closely to see what needs to be done and how to incorporate content that will display well on the new Apple device.

Since we are Joomla based, I can only hope that the Joomla community at large is moving forward with HTML5 equivalents that will keep things running. That’s one of the good things about being on an open-source platform, as opposed to a proprietary system that might be far less responsive to the needs of a small business – there are a lot of people in the same boat.
