Last week we were at the HP Networking Tech Day in Roseville, CA – and this week, we are at VMWorld in San Francisco. Gathering lots of material on videotape, interviews and planning.

It may appear that SDRNews is dormant or podfaded, but nothing could be further than the truth. In fact, in our six year history there has never been a more exciting period of growth and investment in major upgrades to the studio, network, personnel and facilities.

First, SDRNews.com is being developed as the anchor site for several in-depth channels. SDRNews.tv will air almost all of the material that we develop in rough form, much of it live streaming.

LunchAndLearn.tv is the channel for finished short form content that will introduce a variety of technical subjects.

Expert-Media.tv will have in depth tutorial content by category that will allow development of a topic in detail.

SlashdotReview.com will continue as an audio only version of the shows.

This is only a part of the over all Review Communications path that will include additional content in other subject areas, with planned air dates in October, 2010.

We had a chance to talk with Peter Graf at the SAPPHIRE 2010 Conference in Orlando, to learn more about the role that IT managers have in sustainability management. As soon as a company moves beyond minimal compliance, there is an opportunity to use various environmental measures as an indicator of manufacturing efficiency. Peter explains some of the tools that SAP offers to its customers to achieve the goal.

If you are responsible for managing hundreds of machines in a Small or Medium Business environment, software tools for the life cycle after the initial buy can make a big different in TCO.
In part 2 of the Lenovo interview with Steve St. Amant, we find that the ongoing tasks of keeping software up to date, adding applications, managing users is only part of the problem. The entire life cycle of the installation will require safeguarding from malware, archiving, and eventually disposing of the equipment while making sure that the data is safely archived but the disk is electronically shredded.

This episode of SDRNews (SDRN006) provides the introduction to the Cincinnati .NET User Group (CINNUG) Firestarter conference, an event where developers for iPhone, Android, and Windows mobile are given identical project specifications, and then present their development process to peers for comment and review.

The topic was mobile apps – the fastest growing business segment for developers. Many people with good coding skills honed in their day jobs daydream of writing a killer app, publishing though the app store and waiting for the royalty checks to arrive beachside. They may well be in for disappointment. Savvy developers will be able to prosper by studying the marketplace and merging the app that they choose with market and technology trends.

We had over 80 people at the Microsoft office in Mason, OH on April 24, and up to 75 people on the SDRNewsroom live stream of the event. The video series, probably totalling roughly a dozen episodes, will gradually be released over the SDRNews Special Media Feed, and published on the Event Tab at SDRNews.

For the past five and a half years, my goal has been to stay on top of tech news and bring the best selected content to the Slashdotreview / SDR News audience. It’s time to move to a new level, both personally and technically.

This is the SDR Newsroom – The event, product and personal news coverage channel for SDRNews, with technology, business, regulation products or services that might be on the SDRNewsroom list. Here’s the rundown:

Who: I will continue as producer and host of SDRNews, adding guest hosts and interviews on topics related to stories in the news.

What: The format will be presented as a regular video podcast, and include a weekly summary of links and pointers to significant stories of the week. There will be an audio version of the show distributed as well.

When: Beginning now, (as I travel to the National Association of Broadcasters show (NAB) in Las Vegas).

Where: SDRNews.com, Techpodcasts.tv, SDRNewsroom.com and lost of other places.

Why: Since the show began, there has been an explosion of news sources for tech news. Starting in 2004 with Slashdot, adding Digg and Reddit, and eventually moved about 70 RSS feeds that served as sources for the show. At the same time, listeners became aware of services like Google Alerts, PopUrls, and automated RSS readers with speech synthesis.

Those with in-depth interests could set up custom RSS feeds, and those with general interests have scores of outlets that they can select from.

The recent listener survey confirmed the obvious that if I made major changes to the business model (continuing the original format) and going to a paid service, that listeners would simply meet their needs elsewhere.

So, SDRNewsroom is continuing the advertiser supported model but changing the format and content to identify Selected, in Depth Reports that are not available elsewhere – still within the content rules that have met the needs of the audience.

I believe that there is a major shift in consumption patterns on the horizon: The proliferation of platforms such as the iPad, Roku, Boxee, WePad, and Chrome OS – in addition to the iPhone, Android and others make video a crucial part of the mix.

At the same time, I will continue to provide audio versions of the programming, since many in the audience fit SDRNews into a driving commute or exercise regimen where video is not practical.

This week, there will be NAB coverage. I know that I have benefited from great support from listeners for many years, and and confident that it will continue.
