The Power of the Invisible

by Andrew McCaskey
The invisible internet mentioned in today’s news brings to mind the incident from a few weeks ago that I told you about when talking via Skype with a friend and colleague in Australia.

The most unusual part of the discussion was that we took only passing notice of how unusual it was – to be able to fire up laptops and webcams in our respective homes on opposite sides of the globe, and casually connect on Skype for a half hour chat.

The invisible internet – appearing only as information or content on devices such as the Wii, Tivo, iPhone and Kindle approach this ideal. And when I combine it with other discussions with a friend who is in the Heating and Airconditioning business and is excited about IP aware furnaces and air handler units, I catch a vision of how far this will be embedded in the lives of my grandchildren – the first of which we are informed will be joining us on or about Sept 28.
Stay tuned.

Television’s End

by Andrew McCaskey
The Times Online story concerning television is probably the most interesting of the group today because it is just confirming the role and activity of television consumption in our home. The Tivo was a game changer when it arrived more than five years ago, and it has totally shaped our viewing experience. In fact, other than the evening news -which we still consume a few days a week in HD over the air realtime, 90% of our video is from the Tivo, still in standard resolution analog. Our $40 converter boxes are going to go on the two Tivos.

On the other hand, the three minute YouTubes and other content through AppleTV are going up – we usually spend an hour a week total going thorough the movie trailers on the flat screen, and then upscale a DVD for a movie night maybe one night out of the weekend.

The Times Story assures us that we are … normal.

Television's End

by Andrew McCaskey
The Times Online story concerning television is probably the most interesting of the group today because it is just confirming the role and activity of television consumption in our home. The Tivo was a game changer when it arrived more than five years ago, and it has totally shaped our viewing experience. In fact, other than the evening news -which we still consume a few days a week in HD over the air realtime, 90% of our video is from the Tivo, still in standard resolution analog. Our $40 converter boxes are going to go on the two Tivos.

On the other hand, the three minute YouTubes and other content through AppleTV are going up - we usually spend an hour a week total going thorough the movie trailers on the flat screen, and then upscale a DVD for a movie night maybe one night out of the weekend.

The Times Story assures us that we are ... normal.

The Dog that Didn’t Bark

by Andrew McCaskey
I had a chance to catch up with a friend on Skype today – he had relocated to Australia, and I happened to catch him on IM and he just rang me back.

The call came into Skype, rolled over to my Cell phone and I offered to call him back on Skype.
I fired up the laptop, and since the family room TV still had on the news, I wandered to the living room and then upstairs seeking quiet, all the while chatting away.

Once I got upstairs, just for grins turned on the MacBook’s internal camera, as did Rob, and there we were – chatting away on a full video connection.

A few minutes later, we took note: Just how cool is that ? Only a slight lag as the packets hopped router to router, under the Pacific Ocean to the other side of the world – video, smiles, commentary and – if the house had been straighter or the wife not at home the basis for a quick tour.

Just like in the Sherlock Holmes story, the remarkable thing was that the dog did not bark – meaning that – both of us seasoned technologists – took note of the fact, paused, and then went on with our conversation. The technology receding into the background, not to be mentioned again.

From Wikipedia – Silver Blaze

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): “Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”
Holmes: “To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”
Gregory: “The dog did nothing in the night-time.”
Holmes: “That was the curious incident.”

YouTube Cranks It Up

by Andrew McCaskey
YouTube is making good on the promise from a year ago to increase the resolution of at least some of the video content that it serves up.

I’ve tried it on several of the video’s that I have in my YouTube favorites, and so far have found several that have been converted. It’s probably a project that is going to take many months to spread through the inventory but on my limited data set, it’s a real improvement.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the AppleTV 2.0 to pull the higher res version of the next stupid pet trick.

Vista – I’m Not Convinced

by Andrew McCaskey
I had a message from a listener today, saying in effect that I’ve been a part of the blog biased reporting of Vista.

Here’s a part of the message – and I agree in part, I’ve not been the most objective reporter:

”
I’m a regular listener of your show and normally enjoy it. During your 2/21 show you reported on Vista and it had way too much of a soundbite type reporting quality to that segment. You neglected to say why SP1 was pulled. It sounded like you made the assumption that SP1 was a failure after Mossberg tested it and that now Microsoft is pulling it. I’m sure you know that SP1 was pulled because of a problem some people had with the initial update file which is only a temporary problem. I’m getting tired of all the Vista bashers. I’ve been using it on two machines since it first came out. These machines have enough power to handle Vista and I’m blaming manufacturers for not providing drivers in order to sell updated hardware. I’m just not buying the negative view of Vista and I think you should take a look at Ed Bott’s blog to get a real perspective. Too many journalists are jumping on the Vista hating bandwagon. Don’t follow their lead without some solid experience using the OS. “

I responded

Thanks for writing. You are right in that I am probably not providing balanced coverage. I had sort of dismissed a lot of the publicity and went into the wait and see mode. In November, I purchased an ACER 5315 (the famous Walmart Black Friday machine) for my wife, who’s only use would be for web surfing and email – and possibly running a CAD program for quilters (Electric Quilt) . Our other plan was to send it to Grandma for email only. So far we have had a miserable experience with Vista Home Basic on that machine. The initialization went well – in fact she did the setup and it worked for almost two hours in the web browsing mode until a horrible sound caused her to run and turn it off. When she booted back up, there was no sound – and remained so until I located and reinstalled the audio drivers. Next, we continued to have problems with erratic keyboard and touchpad to the point where the machine is unusable. We sent the machine back to ACER for repair under warranty and it came back having passed their checks, new drivers, etc and we are still experiencing the same erratic behavior. I suspected, with only 1GB of RAM that it was totally out of working room – so I put in a Lexar 2GB USB drive and configured it to extend Vista performance. It is unable to run a Wordpad session without keyboard errors and I am getting ready to send it back to ACER again. Regardless of who (ACER, keyboard mfr, Vista) is responsible, this machine is not on its way to Grandma. I plan one more sweep through ACER, an Ubtuntu install and failing that, the dumpster.

It’s probably unfair to criticize an OS based on low end hardware – but my consumer experience with this machine has been miserable – and it is going through a channel that many consumers will fall as unsuspecting victims.

Anyway – thanks for listening to the program and a bit of my personal frustration with my first Vista experience. A year or two from now once this all shakes out, it will be a non issue.

Michael finished up the message thread

That about sums up a bad Vista experience. Rule #1, never buy a computer from Walmart, especially the lowest end one out there. Vista Home Basic is definitely a problem and Microsoft should offer a free upgrade to Home Premium, that I can agree with. I would have to equate it with running XP SP1 still when SP2 is available. It does sound like you got burned on that hardware, sort of like the early days of E-Machines when they used third tier quality hardware that all the other manufacturers were rejecting.

Like Office 2007, Vista is going to be around for quite a while so any new machine that can handle Vista should be purchased with Vista and not XP. Don’t give up yet, it works well on a machine designed for it and newer peripherals. I’m running the beta Vista SP1 and it fixed the slow file copy problem which was the only problem I have really experienced. Both machines that I upgraded are at least three years old now but they were state of the art when new.

That’s just about it: You get what you pay for and I need to move on. It’s going to be a while before I run another Vista experiment.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I am REALLY happy with my new account at Nozbe. Once I looked at the site and figured out the UI, in a few hours I converted from a trial to fully subscription so that I could add multiple projects.

I am now close to seventy projects that I am tracking, as I add in all of the day job tasks as well. Now I have personal, day job, and podcasting all in the same place – and I am getting things back under control and becoming much more confident that I am getting things done and not missing critical deadlines.

I just read this on the Nozbe blog :

Jott links to Nozbe – dictate your tasks and notes
Wednesday, 16. January 2008

Jott is a great service that enables you to dictate your thoughts through your mobile phone and have them sent to your email address or someone else as text message.

Nozbe is a great web application for getting things done that helps you stay on top of your productivity.

Combining Jott and Nozbe gives you a powerful productivity suite. It’s like having a virtual secretary!

Now you can dictate your tasks and notes!

The power of Jott is just great – you phone a toll-free number and record a message that gets translated into a text that… can be added as task or note to your Nozbe account – to any project you want!

Michael ( the Nozbe developer) continues:

. . your Jott message is short, the Jott text will be added to your project as an action. If it’s a long message – it will be added as a Note to the same project. This is very powerful. You’ll be able to dictate ideas and thoughts to your Nozbe without ever losing them!

Note that it may take a few minutes for your Jotts to appear in Nozbe, because Jott needs a while to translate the speech to text. However during our tests the Jotts appeared in Nozbe after a minute or two, so there is no long waiting involved.

Aptera’s First Steps

by Andrew McCaskey

Aptera is one of the first hybrid vehicle manufacturers to get close with a design that’s revolutionary in appearance, if not revolutionary in technology. And with the assist of consumer electronics in the vehicle, it’s utility is going to be expanded well beyond the simple function of transportation.

The Aptera site implies that the GPS and backup camera, stereo system and the like will be a part of the standard package. I imagine that the market segment that this vehicle targets will demand that as standard equipment.

At $30,000 this is not the young family starter vehicle – the notion of the child safety seat in the back is going to be as much for Grandparents as for parents.

This vehicle has Baby Boomer written all over it – a chance to make a statement, save some money on fuel, turn heads, use the HOV lane, and once again – move along on our own terms.

Now.. if they could just add a heater. That’s a Midwest Deal Killer. And it probably makes the 300mpg go south quickly.

The New Bubble
by Andrew McCaskey

The entertaining video by the Richter Scales is a lot of fun – and just like generals and field marshalls of history it points out the tendency to prepare for the last war. Or in our case, the last bubble.

Things are a bit different this time.

First, the affordability of the technology and connectivity are an incredible advantage.

There’s a lot of advantage to location in New York, the Bay Area and so forth, but connectivity does not make that an absolute requirement.

The talent that’s driving this boom are like fish in the sea – in that they have never known a time when the digital environement and at least some element of connectivity did not exist. There are a lot more of them, and they are a lot better connected.

The big difference this time ? The consolidation of industries, oligopolies that are much more skilled in political, lobbyist and regulatory competition . The real battle in this bubble will be fought on EFF turf.

Nothing Like a Good Con

There is nothing like a good con on someone who wants to believe.

That would be me. November 11, scanning for a suitable YouTube video for the show, surfed across the video from Infinite Solutions on adapting YouTube videos for the Video iPod.

My first excuse is that I don’t own a video iPod. That’s poor leverage, though. I should have been paying attention, as at some level I knew that the YouTube Video segments were Flash based and that the video iPod required mpeg based files.

I even had tried one of the transcoding sites that would allow you to transform mpeg based files into Flash video, and vice versa.

But I sure did not have any critical thinking skills on display when I picked the episode.

I think that I did meet the mission of SDR YouTube- to find videos on YouTube that would be of interest to SDRNews listeners. Just that I would like to have them full of non-BS content.

Thanks to the Thomas Couey, who called me out:

I’m sure someone’s let you know by now, but InfiniteSolutions (the source of the YouTube video for 11-11) is a joke organization, sort of like The Onion. They produce videos that are basically “practical joke” videos designed to trick people into believing ridiculous things. YouTube video is stored in a flash video format (.flv) the iPod does not support this format, nor will it transcode from it. The iPod uses MPEG-4 or H.264 compression primarily. Anyway, I’ve seen some web sites that will transcode YouTube videos to mpeg-4 for you, but they usually get shut down by YouTube for copyright infringement. It’s also very time consuming.

. . .

It seems like you’re an engineer of some sort, but if you have any kind of electrical engineering background, you should be able to tell that he’s just throwing out electrical jargon that makes no sense in context. He does a good job of making his B.S. sound convincing, but I assure you, all of his videos are jokes.

In any case, you may want to let everyone know that they’re not going to be able to podcast youtube videos in the way that he presents it.

I enjoy the podcast. Keep up the good work.

Thomas Couey

Here’s part of my reply..

Thomas -

I sure am embarrassed ! Thanks for the heads up. I have no excuse, other than the gullibility that surrounds topics that I am sort of familiar with but obviously not in sync with.
. . . my engineering background is in radio/wireless and fiber optic carrier equipment. web based video ? Not so much . . .

I had seen the flv to mp4 sites maybe six months ago but since I don’t have a video ipod had not had any need for the service.

Glad you are enjoying the show.. Thanks for the note.

Andy

The video I selected today – I would have picked up on.. I’m sure of it.

That would be me. November 11, scanning for a suitable YouTube video for the show, surfed across the video from Infinite Solutions on adapting YouTube videos for the Video iPod.

My first excuse is that I don't own a video iPod. That's poor leverage, though.

Here's part of my reply..

Thomas -

I sure am embarrassed ! Thanks for the heads up. I have no excuse, other than the gullibility that surrounds topics that I am sort of familiar with but obviously not in sync with.

Electric Cars – A Mighty Big Bite

The San Jose Mercury News highlights the story of the role that the tech industry could have in the refinement, manufacture and development of the next generation of electric automobiles.

As the the theory goes, the California business model of technology, finance and innovation is just the sort of breakthrough thinking and expertise that can break the electric car bottleneck.

The practice may turn out to be something different. For all of the faults of the auto business, it must be pointed out that the sheer size and scope of the operations of a GM or a Toyota producing tens of millions of vehicles per year is something that is pretty ambitious, even by Valley standards.

One bit of rationality that has crept into the discussion is the realization that we probally need at least two sets of vehicles – small and economical city cars and bio-diesel / extended range vehicles for long haul or thinly populated areas.

The only fly in the ointment ? Rationality does not rule. If it did, there would be an immediate mandate on any Federally funded project to require paved sidewalks on any new construction from here on out. Consider how many miles of sidewalk got paved in your neighborhood and just how much of your daily life is walkable.

That’s the challenge. And it is just as big as the challenges facing the electric car.
