The Word on 31 Days of the Dragon

by Andrew McCaskey

If you listened to the show today, you know why I have been so excited about the promotion that we will be running, along with thirty other blogs and podcasts beginning May 9th.

The 31 Days of the Dragon is a promotion between 31 participating web sites, with the sponsorship
of HP.

HP is working with those websites offering 31 prize packages – one a day for 31 days
during a period from 09 May through 08 June 2008.

SDRNews will be giving away one of these systems to a lucky listener sometime during that 31 day period. And, by visiting each of the sites and entering each contest, you will have a total of at least 31 chances to win – probably much more.

Each participating website will have its own competition with its own prize, each a HP HDX Dragon
Entertainment Notebook loaded with features and software.

The HP HDX Dragon comes with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) and is powered by an Intel
Core 2 Extreme Processor X9000 (2.80GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB). Other features include 20.1″
diagonal WUXGA High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen (1920×1200) 1080p, 4GB DDR2 System
Memory (2 Dimm), 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS, HP Imprint Finish (Dragon) + Fingerprint Reader
+ Webcam + Microphone, Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth, 500GB 5400RPM
SATA Dual Hard Drive (250GB x 2), Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer, Integrated
HP HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner and 4 Altec Lansing speakers with HP Triple Bass Reflex subwoofer, and 9

I’ll have details as they emerge- announced both on the podcast and here on the site. As I get updates, I will post them so that you will be able to take action immediately as I learn more about the actions of the other sites.

===

I am very honored to have been chosen by HP and Buzz Corps to participate in this promotion, and my thanks go out to SDRNews listeners who have helped make this possible.

Cell Lithium Ion Battery.

This has been the subject of an entire stream of emails this weekend and phone calls as the details come together. There is a conference call at 11:00AM Eastern Monday where I will learn more details on exactly how this will be done.

I know that the official promotion period – Day 1 will commence May 9, 2008.

It’s rare to find philosophical articles in the tech press, and that is what makes the essay from ITWorld by Don Reisinger worthy of note.

His premise is that today’s best loved computer and tech companies – Apple and Google – will in short order become as hated as some of their predecessors. Human nature being what it is, it is a wonder that it won’t be here within a few years.

There is something in the American story that enjoys the Google story on the way up, the pledge to “Not be Evil” along with the underdog story of Apple for the past thirty years. Then, when the tipping point occurs, all of a sudden that admiration turns to disgust.

It happens first among the elites – which have been well courted by both Google and Apple – but it takes a long time for the majority to turn against them.

Just observe Walmart. I’d wager that put to a vote, Walmart would still remain pretty popular, and will do so for a long time. Apple and Google will share the same fate.

USB Underground

by Andrew McCaskey
The New York Times article on the use of USB sticks as the distribution medium of choice in Cuba for illicit information, web sites, videos and audio files captured my interest today.

I was reminded of articles that were published perhaps 25-30 years ago that spoke of the role of the Phillips tape cassette in the return of Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 following years of exile in France. For many years, his followers distributed and duplicated cassette tapes around the Shah’s secret police. The phrase used by some was “small media – big revolution”.

It looks like history is repeating itself.

Obsolete Skills

by Andrew McCaskey
I almost used the item from Robert Scoble in the show yesterday- but I am glad that I waited a day because all sorts of interesting lists sprung up on the Obsolete Skills Wiki in 24 hours.

If you have been kicking around the technology arena for fifty years (I started young), you will have picked up a good number of the items on the lists. In fact, many if not most were hard won by training and experience, a source of considerable pride.

After years of training to conserve memory and conserve bandwidth, it’s hard to shift gears into a world where in the main memory is free and bandwidth is free. In fact, the phrase and skill “shifting gears” is in itself obsolete.

Memory and bandwidth may be close to free, but the skill of removing complexity is still in demand.

Computer History Museum

by Andrew McCaskey
This gets pretty dangerous listening to the anniversary videos for the Commodore 64 and the early history of the personal computer. Living through that history is personal in that I remember those events well – and while they have certainly occured some time ago, it is hard to believe that it has been twenty five or thirty years ago.

The video on the Commodore 64 actually begins after about 12 minutes of commercial promotion of the museum itself – which is pretty redundant if you have seen some of the other videos in the series. – If you were a part of this, even at a distance – you will find this to be a very interesting series.

How am I’m I putting this into perspective ? I am getting ready to document the coverage for the TPN reporting from CES 2008 in Las Vegas. It is going to be a fun show, as always – and in addition to the official TPN coverage, I want to add some special content that will help to put a personal face on all the reporting that you will see.

Stay tuned..

The New Bubble
by Andrew McCaskey

The entertaining video by the Richter Scales is a lot of fun – and just like generals and field marshalls of history it points out the tendency to prepare for the last war. Or in our case, the last bubble.

Things are a bit different this time.

First, the affordability of the technology and connectivity are an incredible advantage.

There’s a lot of advantage to location in New York, the Bay Area and so forth, but connectivity does not make that an absolute requirement.

The talent that’s driving this boom are like fish in the sea – in that they have never known a time when the digital environement and at least some element of connectivity did not exist. There are a lot more of them, and they are a lot better connected.

The big difference this time ? The consolidation of industries, oligopolies that are much more skilled in political, lobbyist and regulatory competition . The real battle in this bubble will be fought on EFF turf.

The technology will take care of itself.

Hyperion’s Challenge

The most interesting intersections are technology, politics and business. It looks like the Hyperion Power Generation system hits the Trifecta – and other than the feature story in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science, I think that they are going to have a really hard time with their backyard nuclear reactor – no matter how beneign.

The endorsement of at least some of the scientists at the Los Alamos National Lab is a good start, but it will not be enough to get past the critical public. And just like nuclear power in general, when the policy makers come under the sway of the particular industry lobby – King Coal will probably come out on top.

My ignorance is probably not any worse than the next person’s – but somehow the idea of un-secured nuclear material of any sort in small enough batches that every 25,000 homes you need another one leaves the concern not so much how you make the device practical and affordable – but how you would make it physically secure. “Back to the Future” was just the setting for Mr. Fusion as a power source on the individual (or even small city) scale. Same thing would go for Mr. Fission as well.

Hyperion's Challenge

The most interesting intersections are technology, politics and business. It looks like the Hyperion Power Generation system hits the Trifecta - and other than the feature story in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science, I think that they are going to have a really hard time with their backyard nuclear reactor - no matter how beneign.

The endorsement of at least some of the scientists at the Los Alamos National Lab is a good start, but it will not be enough to get past the critical public. And just like nuclear power in general, when the policy makers come under the sway of the particular industry lobby - King Coal will probably come out on top.

My ignorance is probably not any worse than the next person's - but somehow the idea of un-secured nuclear material of any sort in small enough batches that every 25,000 homes you need another one leaves the concern not so much how you make the device practical and affordable - but how you would make it physically secure. "Back to the Future" was just the setting for Mr. Fusion as a power source on the individual (or even small city) scale. Same thing would go for Mr. Fission as well.

WiFi Survival

It has been almost a year since I became aware of the risk of connecting to open WiFi points without the benefit of a VPN. Perhaps it was due to some of the travel that I had through O’Hare over the course of a few points. Over the course of six or eight weeks, I was traveling through the same terminals and firing up the laptops. What I was seeing were more and more “Free Access”, “Open WiFi”, Consumer WiFi, Courtesy Acces Point and similar ID’s showing up.

Of course, as different sections of the official O’Hare network opened up, more and more transient bad guys were putting up fake access points.

I discovered Public VPN – and have been pretty happy with their service. It’s a pleasure to use on the Mac with OSX – totally transparent. On the Toshiba box WiFi in general is a different story – but when I am able to get XP , the un-disconnectable Toshiba wireless manager, and the Intel chipset manager to quit fighting, the VPN is well worth the trouble.

Or at least I feel better seeing the test site indicator turn from red to green.

After all, in the wide open jungles of O’Hare, you don’t have to be able to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy, and make him a more attractive WiFi target. Public VPN fills the bill for $60 a year – and combined with a $200 limit Visa card used only for online logins and day passes, it makes open WiFi computing just a bit more sane.

One Data Point with Verizon

For the past two years or so, I have maintained two separate broadband connections – the original DSL Bronze that was first installed in 1999, and the connection via Comcast Cable Modem.

The original intent of the dual service was a real time backup. High speed was limited on the Cable modem service, especially on uplink, and my idea was to use a Dual-WAN router as a means of increasing the uplink speed for the podcast audio file each night.

Worked great, except when using the company VPN – which just could not handle tokens arriving from one IP address and data packets arriving from another that were supposed to be a part of the same stream. So, it gradually fell into disuse. Comcast upgraded their uplink speed, and the problem went away.

Recently, I noticed that the Fujitsu DSL modem was dead -Verizon 800 service said take it to the local Verizon office, they said could not help as it was obsolete Frame Relay based hardware so I went back and cancelled the service totally.

What impressed me was the counter offer. Lifetime service price guarantee at only $14.95 per month, 2 year initial contract – 768Kb down, no idea what the uplink data rate involved. I asked about their highest speed down – and she said “3.0 Service” . Not sure 3.0 of what but that was about $35 per month, still with that lifetime price guarantee and two year committment.

There is just something about the two year contract and Verizon that hits me wrong. And a gnawing feeling that a lifetime of anything related to broadband access has me on the short end of the deal.

Now, make that 3.0 Service guaranteed never to be shaped, a true Net-Neutrality line .. now we might be talking.

Consuming Questions Continue

Comments continue to arrive from listeners in response to the questions posed earlier in the week.

First, comments from Daniel Rairigh, a long term underwriter for the program..

” For a number of years, I read Slashdot daily. I found it was the best way to keep abreast of what was happening across the tech world (research, hardware, software, and politics). However, I still found that Slashdot consumed a good deal of my valuable time. SDR was a huge time saver when I found it, because I could get all my tech news while I commuted to work, time that was otherwise wasted.

Getting the news while I commute is the key to me. If for instance, you were to give fewer details for each item, then I would have to go and look up every article that was of interest to me after I got to work, and that would take more of my time. That is why I appreciate the summary you give for each news item. In general, all I need is a quick synopsis, just to have an idea of what is happening. Then I only have to look up the items that are really crucial to me. “

———————

The podcasting world is changing so rapidly that I am really trying to take stock and understand the needs of the hard core listeners – and make sure that they are well served. A lot of the advice that I get from the PME convention is related to popular culture sorts of programs, and while some of the things sound like fun I am not sure how productive they might be in serving the SDR audience.

I am stretched really thin and have to make some careful choices on my time as well. I am still trying to decide on the videos, if they are worth the trouble – or if that in some way connects to new listeners and a slightly different demographic. I know that they are getting big enough that they need to be indexed in some way, and that is a real project.

—————————————

John Kemp echos the same theme

For me, it’s simple. It is too time consuming to filter through all of the links on Slashdot, Digg and Reddit. I need to have someone determine what is important tech news on a daily basis, and that is what you provide. Almost everyday I am interested in reading a little more about a certain topic and that is why slashdotreview.com is so valuable. Within seconds I am going through an article/blog that is of interest to me and that has just come out in the last couple of days.

And Jeremy Bailey responded in a similar way -

To answer your question, I used to read slashdot religiously during
lunch each day at work, but as we got more employees, I started to be
more socialable. This left me with no time to read slashdot, but a
40min (each way) commute. It was a godsend to find your podcast. I
could fill up my commute with something interesting (radio was getting
boring) and keep up to date on Slashdot! Yeah! Keep up the great work!

He also provided a list of some of the favorite videos that he has enjoyed

Yes, I also check out your site at least once a week to see what videos
you are showing. I think the videos I have enjoyed the most are
examples of technology in use such as:
Standford Car
inverted Pendulum
The Harddrive repair series (first one only)
the RoboDrive (external raid like device)
Airtrax
Omidirectional Treadmil
the MS photo software demo (combines multiple images to create 1)

Left out the Stonehenge in Michigan video one of my personal favorites.

Consuming Questions Continue

Comments continue to arrive from listeners in response to the questions posed earlier in the week.

First, comments from Daniel Rairigh, a long term underwriter for the program..

" For a number of years, I read Slashdot daily.

---------------------

The podcasting world is changing so rapidly that I am really trying to take stock and understand the needs of the hard core listeners - and make sure that they are well served. A lot of the advice that I get from the PME convention is related to popular culture sorts of programs, and while some of the things sound like fun I am not sure how productive they might be in serving the SDR audience.

I am stretched really thin and have to make some careful choices on my time as well. I am still trying to decide on the videos, if they are worth the trouble - or if that in some way connects to new listeners and a slightly different demographic. I know that they are getting big enough that they need to be indexed in some way, and that is a real project.

---------------------------------------

John Kemp echos the same theme

For me, it's simple.
