Gas Saving Devices
by Andrew McCaskey
One of the fun items that would be more fun if it were not so serious: The Federal Trade Commission papers and studies on various gas saving devices, inventions, and schemes.
I expect that this has been around since the beginning of the automobile age, but my personal recollection began as a kid in the 1950′s when, in the company of my grandfather I got to sit in the cigar smoke and deer head on the wall country barbershop, listening to tales of the 100 mile per gallon carburetor that Esso or Texaco or Shell or one of the oil companies had secretly purchased to keep it off the market. I think gasoline was somewhere in the neighborhood of 27 cents a gallon.
Thestreet.com has a summary of a number of such devices, ranging from the disappointing to the outright fraudulant.
The most effective money saving tips surrounded the hardest of all – changing habits of driving, especially reducing speed on freeways. With a little more time on the next trip to the East Coast, I might just give it a try. Especially if the EVDO coverage improves. Other than the glare on the screen and general light levels, it’s not a bad way to get some work done – as long as you have someone to drive.
