You’ll Want More

Bandwidth is suddenly the name of the game. The discussion from Time Warner on 5GB, 10GB, 20GB and 40GB monthly bandwidth caps and trials in Beaumont, TX are setting the stage.
And I think carriers that follow that model are going to shoot themselves in the foot if they try to ration bandwidth out or tell people how to use it.
DSL speeds of 10Mbps download in the newly announced Yahoo DSL Max ($99-$150) (ouch) are just the tip of the iceberg.
It’s interesting to note that the DSL offering is available only when you are subscribing to the U-Verse cable TV system that brings in simultaneous 6Mbps HDTV streams that you are eligible to add the new 10Mbps DSL. That means the inbound pipe is something on the order of 22Mbps.
Why won’t Yahoo sell you that entire pipe ?
I have the Comcast Hi-Speed service, which maxes out at 15 Mbps down and 1500Kbps up. I’m fortunate to live close to something, as it seldom droops below 9Mbps down, even on weekends and just after school lets out. But, I run absolutely nothing else – don’t even split the basic cable out through an RF drop. Every bit of that RF heads into the DOCIS box.
As soon as the Apple TV upgrade comes later this month – I know that I’m going to be doing some regular downloads to feed the movie rentals.

Bandwidth is going to be consumed in the strangest of places – by today’s standards – and will be so commonplace three years from now, it will be remarkable that we thought that a fridge did not take some bandwidth. That’s why the Whirlpool product line deserves some major kudos for getting out ahead of the pack.
The last thing that I want as a consumer is some carrier that decides that I don’t need bandwidth for my fridge.
