      VoIP Threats

You should never underestimate the capabilities of the bad guys to go after the vulnerabilities of an otherwise good thing. Case in point, the VoIP security vulnerability disclosed in today’s video.

Even without the spy-versus-spy aspect of insider trading, trade secrets, negotiation discussions or similar high reward schemes, you can expect low level “vandals for hire” to be up for the highest bidder.

Imagine the “$50,000 in small bills to make it go away” scenario. All it would take would be the lone compromised PC inside the firewall to result in every phone in the call center to ring simultaneously at 10:23 AM, go dead for 30 seconds.

The extortion threat and execution would be clean, efficient, transient and repeatable. A series of attacks could result in a steady income stream, and it would scale well through multiple organizations.

I expect that the expertise for hire is already available from a number of sources.

The Phil Zimmerman link in the show notes should be of interest if your organization is considering the VoIP transition.
