      Net Taxing Sanity

It’s seldom that Congress gets credit, but the House committee that voted to extend the moratorium on net access taxes is certainly on the right track.

Senator Obama had some statistic that tracked the correlation between one percentage point in broadband penetration and tens of thousands of jobs at the state level. While it is a bit harder to argue causality, at some instinctive level, I think he’s absolutely right.

It is also clear that each and every time this “temporary” extension is renewed, that there are plenty of hungry wolves at the door who would love to tax not only access but every bit that flows along the pipe into and out of your home or business.

Confusion reigns as far as the disruptive impact of broadband access over the long term. You can be assured that as local television and radio stations are affected (always a favorite of politicians in the mutual access-revenue campaign model) by broadband’s penetration into a city or state – the pressure will go up to tax internet access.

Add in the rebellion against property tax in many states and local communities, and that internet tax becomes more and more attractive.

Let’s hope that Senators continue to recognize it’s importance to the economy.
