Power Grid Basics

The RSA conference item of most significance looks to be the one on the hacking of the SCADA network that monitors and controls the US power grid.
Originally a separate and dedicated system – the basic compromise of adding LAN cards to systems and informal net access provided the opening – along with some basic social engineering that assured that malware could and would be loaded on machines for access at a later time.
There was a lot of interest in botnets, spam, and phishing sorts of scams – but that looks pretty tame in comparison to the SCADA hack.
Maybe that is the wakeup call for the rest of us.
The bad guys already knew that.
