      Location as the Next Big Thing

      Two of the articles today need to be taken together – the idea of location based information as the Next Big Thing, and the idea of the rise of Blogging, Twitter, and Pownce as the next interation in the narrowing of the news cycle.

      How much of the daily news do you need to know, and why do you need to know it ?

      It’s more than a philosophical question, especially as I screen and edit stories for the podcast each evening.

      First of all, there is the local and immediate – weather to plan for, traffic delays to route around – that come to listeners through other channels.

      Next there are the obvious job related alerts – like the Adobe key logger exploit.

      But where did the mention of the Victorian Internet – the Telegraph come from ? What about the analog computer from World War II and New Zealand rabbit populations ? The item on the brain protein that regulates fear ?

      Each of those stories are neither location or time relevant. I’m glad that each is in the “news”. It’s the opportunity to ponder, if only for a moment, the human interaction of the technology that we all swim in without realization.

      Positioning in place and time might be the most important story of the day.

          Logging In at Logan Airport

          Logging in at Logan-

          I bet that this airport lounge has sold more Verizon EVDO cards than any single business traveler site in the country.

          This is going to either get posted through the t-mobile node at O’Hare or wait until this evening and get loaded up on the COMCAST connection from home. This is not for lack of trying.

          The Massport system seems to be very efficient at taking credit card information, and less effective when it comes to handing out DHCP connections. It’s a deja-vu experience from the last trip to Boston. That trip, I had more time and decided to burn some cellphone minutes with the tech support who finally gave up and gave me a login account and password.

          The $7.95 for the day pass this morning seems to be safely gone – as well as the twenty minutes or so that I had planned to grab a few images and prepare for the Joost portion of the Techpodcast Roundtable on Saturday.

          No option or time to pursue that today.
          I just hate to commit to EVDO if Sprint is really going to roll out the WIMAX network as quickly as promised. Plus, I am not sure that either one will be accessible from home.

          This moves me one step further along the path that is going to make some rep happy at either Verizon or Sprint. Nobody is going to stop traveling through Logan airport because of this. But it looks to me like Verizon owes Massport some sales commissions.

          The only one unhappy will be me.

              Apple Raises it to a New Level

              I had been privately counseled to keep an eye on Apple for the rest of the year, every six or eight weeks, for another surprise.

              This one does not even come from Apple – it’s the item today from Business Week that shows how Apple is going to benefit from all the EMI provided, non-DRM’d AAC encoded content.

              How much of this was Apple intent and how much was the result of years of mis-judgements by Microsoft and a score of partners who were trying to unseat Apple remains to be seen.

              But the effect -that AAC will become the defacto non-DRM’d distribution standard is nothing less than an stroke of marketing genius, once again. The rising tide of DRM-free content will lift all boats – just Apple’s boat a bit more than others.

                  Politics, Technology and Business

                  One of the best articles today is the citation from Reddit, which questions the longevity of automobiles in the US economy.

                  While the first four or five pages of the article continue to offer up some time worn topics on energy sufficiency, peak of production in the oil patch, global climate change and so forth, the argument gets interesting about page six.

                  The central question is the allocation of resources in the continued construction of suburbs, strip malls, freeways and entertainment facilities. At the macro level, investment – but investment in a dead end, as no technology will be able to enable continued use of those assets over the long term.

                  Reddit often leans towards the political. Here’s one instance where the political is the driving force – regardless of the underlying technology.

                      You can’t get much further from my personal knowledge base than the news item tonight on MacroGenonmics, the idea that bashing DNA into bits and then reassembling the fragments by computer power is the way to improve microbiology. Yet the article- presumably fact checked pretty well by the Science Daily editors – claims that this is the most significant find since the discovery of the microscope,

                      Even allowing for a little Public Relations enthusiasm, I think the microscope has been pretty important, and if it was outclassed by this new approach, I should take note.

                          TPN Growing Pains

                          There are fifty shows, at last count at the new TPN site, and the list is growing quickly. I hope that you will be able to stop by the site at Techpodcasts.com and take a look at the new programs that are being added.

                          The site is not fully operational, in that the search by tag function is not yet working. That will enable you to click on, for example, LinuxMCE and pull all episodes that have been produced by TPN that have been tagged with that content.

                          While each episode’s web page posting is also presented on the show page at TPN, it will not be the same as the regular page – because the flash and javascript generated content will not appear.

                          That means that two features of SlashdotReview will not be immediately available: The SDR YouTube Video, and the list of del.icio.us show notes.

                          Show notes are still available by clicking on the link – they will just not appear in the text.

                          I’lll be working on those two issues in the next few days, along with one or two other features that I hope to announce.

                              The posting earlier today told most of the story – and that story is going to be of great benefit to listeners of this show and all of the TPN podcasts.

                              At last count, there were 47 shows on the new Techpodcasts.com site – some of them old favorites that you have come to know over the past two years, and some new talent and directions that will push the boundaries in new directions.

                                  Comment Title

                                  The comparison at the Hard OCP site between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD shows some jockeying for position in the race. Reading between the lines of various press releases and comments, Hard OCP is hinting strongly that some in the X-rated business might be more flexible than before in their ability to source to Blu-Ray. Add to that the lack of current plans to build in HD-DVD by Microsoft into any console (making them all add-ons) and the momentum seems to be passing in the favor of Blu-Ray. Of course, we are preaching to the choir – as most of the folks buying new flat-screen TV’s think they are doing just fine.

Reading between the lines of various press releases and comments, Hard OCP is hinting strongly that some in the X-rated business might be more flexible than before in their ability to source to Blu-Ray. Add to that the lack of current plans to build in HD-DVD by Microsoft into any console (making them all add-ons) and the momentum seems to be passing in the favor of Blu-Ray.                                         It is seldom that I am able to gain full attention around the house for most of the topics on SDRNews, but the Linux Media Center Edition has certainly gotten some attention of the positive variety. Since we have not yet made the plunge and written the big check for the Flat Panel TV (primarily due to the HD Tivo capability that’s become an essential part of the household) – the Linux MCE is becoming a viable contender. Come the weekend, it looks like there might be some serious investigation required. For the time being, I can forego the gyroscopic mouse option and the lighting control, the Voip PBX, IP cameras, bluetooth and IR . If this thing is half as good as the video – this is going to be fun !
