      One Data Point with Verizon

For the past two years or so, I have maintained two separate broadband connections – the original DSL Bronze that was first installed in 1999, and the connection via Comcast Cable Modem.

The original intent of the dual service was a real time backup. High speed was limited on the Cable modem service, especially on uplink, and my idea was to use a Dual-WAN router as a means of increasing the uplink speed for the podcast audio file each night.

Worked great, except when using the company VPN – which just could not handle tokens arriving from one IP address and data packets arriving from another that were supposed to be a part of the same stream. So, it gradually fell into disuse. Comcast upgraded their uplink speed, and the problem went away.

Recently, I noticed that the Fujitsu DSL modem was dead -Verizon 800 service said take it to the local Verizon office, they said could not help as it was obsolete Frame Relay based hardware so I went back and cancelled the service totally.

What impressed me was the counter offer. Lifetime service price guarantee at only $14.95 per month, 2 year initial contract – 768Kb down, no idea what the uplink data rate involved. I asked about their highest speed down – and she said “3.0 Service” . Not sure 3.0 of what but that was about $35 per month, still with that lifetime price guarantee and two year committment.

There is just something about the two year contract and Verizon that hits me wrong. And a gnawing feeling that a lifetime of anything related to broadband access has me on the short end of the deal.

Now, make that 3.0 Service guaranteed never to be shaped, a true Net-Neutrality line .. now we might be talking.
