      Slingbox and EVDO

The video for today presents a really interesting technology. The question is, will wireless carriers in the US strangle it in the cradle ?

I have really enjoyed the Slingbox on business trips. Being able to log on to the home Tivo – long after the family – running on Eastern time – has gone to bed, while I am in California or Tokyo is a great application. Especially overseas, the access to local programming and shows is a good reminder of home.

Likewise, even in the US the cable selection at even good hotels ranges from the mediocre to the trivial. The Slingbox / Tivo combination to the rescue.

Today’s SDR News video is from CES – and shows the combination of a Palm OS Sprint phone and a beta version of the Slingbox player. So far, so good. It’s an idea combination of portability, time shifting of the media that you have already time shifted at your home, now place shifted to the commuter train or waiting room. The smart phone extends the productivity opportunity, and the Slingbox viewer extends the opportunity to vedge.

Only problem ? Under a typical carrier’s data plan, you are in direct violation of the terms of use – using all those bits for non-authorized purposes, right up there with running a torrent seeder to direct pirate movie downloads or running Skype to steal long distance minutes from your wireless carrier.

Nothing like an unlimited data plan for $70 a month- until you start to use it to download media streams, instead of going through the walled garden gate – subscribing to the video content from the carrier that they want you to watch.

      Imagine that.
