      Robotic Arms Race

      by Andrew McCaskey
The article on the arms race in robotic technology – US Troops versus insurgents points to the risk that has been inherent ever since the first “infernal machine” was designed.

It’s rare that any one group can hold the monopoly on technology for long. And we have a ‘not so good’ record of underestimating adversaries and their ability to turn our own technology against us. From the simplest reversal of direction of Claymore mines in Vietnam to the adoption of the ‘yet to be fielded’ $500 cruise missile based on consumer GPS it’s a rare window of time where we enjoy the exclusive use of any technology.
And, as the Taliban demands for shutdown of the cellphone network at night remind us, the bad guys weapons of intimidation and fear are the most effective of all.
