Dislocation in the Wireless Business

Wired Magazine has a compelling article that focuses on just how disruptive the iPhone has been to the entrenched wireless carriers.
It has not come a moment too soon. I have to admit that I was dragging my feet for almost a year – but when the family surprised me with a Christmas iPhone gift just in time for CES – it made be a believer in short order.
The most striking feature was the 1.1.3 upgrade that arrived just after I returned from CES – adding geolocation features, the ability to customize the icons on the control panel, shifting among three separate screens.
My immediate response was to install a dedicated icon for Nozbe – putting me immediately into the planning and action mode.
After two years in the Motorola Razr phone walled garden on AT&T and years before that in the grips of Verizon, the iPhone is a breath of fresh air.
No wonder that Sprint wireless is losing customers left and right. I just hope that they stay in business long enough for me to get some service from my new EVDO card. Unfortunately, the only time that I will get benefit is when I am on the road – being firmly in a 1xRTT area – but it will be sweet when I am in a metro area and can get on board.
