      Television Distruption

The TechCrunch article on Joost and the ticking time bomb is perhaps one of the most interesting today, because it indicates the instability in the television portion of the digital media space.

Two reasons – one related to the technology and the adoption by Adobe of the H.264 codec, and the other relating to the content itself – and how the owners of Joost and the alignment with existing media companies such as Viacom hoped to suppress or deflect the impact of changes in the video space.

As I have said before, there has got to be a reason that the Apple TV box is positioned in the long term fight for the living room. Although a marginal performer today – Apple TV is the “Hobby Product” that could at any point burst onto the scene as a viable hardware alternative.

Adobe adoption of H.264 promises a subjective doubling of perceived video quality on YouTube. Add to that the improved tolerance for user created content – consumable on demand at time and venue of the viewer’s choice and part one is in place.

Part Two is the announcement by Google of the View Ad-Words equivalent that provides content targeted ad content in a presentation format that cannot be DVR’d around.

More going on in TV land than the HDTV conversion. Lots more.
