Missing NAB

Day job conflicts prevented me from covering NAB – the National Association of Broadcasters in Las Vegas this week for the Tech Podcast Network, just as Todd Cochrane and I provided coverage for the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show.
Not going to NAB is a big loss for me – not only to re-establish connections from the industry from fifteen years ago, but to step out in a new direction with the new media folks, especially Mogulus.
There are few constants in this world, and I fully expect that the changes that I would see in Big Media would be monumental.
First – the impact of technology that began in the late 1980′s and early 90′s – the realm of the Amiga based “Video Toaster” and non-linear editing from Avid that first appeared at that time soon put the Grass Valley big iron out to pasture in all but a few of the largest of stations and production houses.
Second – the democratization of content production and affordable content delivery (even it it scales awkwardly) is cutting the economic model that has prospered for 80 years of commercial broacasting to shreds.
I am one of the very few who pauses at 6:30 to watch NBC evening news. It lasts until the first break, since I have the laptop out and have hit CNN to see if there are any other stories of interest. I punch over to the Tivo or Apple TV and multitask with the laptop.
Looking carefully past the show business portion of the exhibits, I think I would see more than a little fear.
