      Spying on Analyst Brains

The military problem remains – not the gathering of the image data – but in the resources (human and machine) to process and interpret the stream of data in the search for meaningful, actionable information.

The DARPA experiment observing the limbic brain response to extremely short exposure (on the order of 100 milliseconds) – before a human thought can be formed is an exciting development. It is also a clue to how much we yet have to learn concerning the capabilities of brains and our specie’s ability to react to an ever changing environment.

That’s what the writers, producers, and advertisers have to look to as well. The flee or flight response embedded in our human ancestor’s DNA is going to come in handy in the next few months.

I had a chance to attend a ProTools instruction session last evening – once again to see how the technology behind pop music continues to disrupt entertainment and the music industry. Television is right in the middle of a similar shift – with writers today, but only a few months away from similar moves by actors and others within the industry.

The shake out will determine the shape of the industry for many years to come. The last big dislocation came in the ASCAP/BMI strike in 1941.
