Hard to tell if the Barbarians are at the gates, or less of a threat – but with the ability to use various “jailbreak” programs to add functionality to the iPhone or iPod Touch, the telco world continues to disintegrate.

Actually the dis-integration and removal of a single “all knowing ” authority might not be such a bad thing. Forty years after the Carterphone decision – moving through the breakup of ATand T it’s somewhat refreshing to see that Apple is not going to be much more successful than others in keeping the technology totally bottled up.

The Open Source “Freeswitch” project- a Class V version of the Asterisk PBX – is another example of the impact of the changes sweeping through the telco world.

With gasoline approaching $3.50, Diesel over $4.00 and unknown aviation fuel costs – the telecom sector should be poised for another leap. All that dark fiber and bandwidth is going to come in handy.
