HP Real Talk: Linux on the Mainframe

by Andrew McCaskey
Since HP has plays in both the Integrity SuperDome line and in the x86 Proliant servers they have a story to tell on both sides. So, with recent calls to consolidate large numbers of x86 systems into a mainframe that have sounded through the industry, HP tooks a much closer look. In face, HP seems to say “If it sounds to good to be true – you might want to look closely”.

I had a chance to attend a private HP webinar today and gained a new appreciation for some of the challenges that a modern IT shop has, answering the question “How does that happen, really ?” .

If you are in a Non-Stop continuous availability mode, E-Payments, Realtime applications leads you to a mainframe as the prime infrastructure for your business. Conversely, the x86 approach offers Custom Apps or web services at much reduced costs.

People and energy are expensive – especially on an enterprise scale. If you’ve added scores of x86 chasing those cost savings, it’s tempting to allocate part of a mainframe to Linux, add in a bunch of virtual machines, and consolidate systems.

There are a lot of assumptions that go into any TCO calculation over a three or five year horizon, and it was apparent that a modern IT manager will have to keep their options open.
