The knapsack style unit has a sphere with 11 separate video cameras, and a substantial backpack computer and presumably batteies on board. The cameras simultaneously record 11 channels of video, to front, sides, rear, looking up down and to the sides. The video is stitched REALTIME into a composite image that is then processed through the CNN web page. It allows you to not only see what the crew is focused upon, but allows you to gaze in a 360 degree sphere around the cameraman to see the entire environment and have much more accurate picture of what is really going on – as if you were there. You will be able to replay, looking again at the building, demonstration, attack, fire, police – what ever is being covered. Now – the real new roles are reversed. CNN Geodesic Camera

by Andrew McCaskey
CNN Geodesic Camera is a Game Changer

Over the weekend, CNN released the first footage that was gathered by the portable 360 degree camera in Haiti.

Instead of the web coverage being a poor substitute for the real coverage on air – ‘live by satellite’ The on the air channel is the barker and commercial support for the real news – the web site that contains not only the image that the producer intended you to see in telling the story, but the surrounding levels of interest, indifference, amusement, skepticism or dare we say reality.

As these cameras are increasingly deployed, they are going to give an even more powerful sense of being there.
