CES Interviews for Tech Behind Products

Not all of the CES interviews surround products – enjoy some of the story and tech behind products.
Navteq digital maps are used in many consumer products such as GPS and cellphone navigation. This exhibit showed the 3D measurement system using LIDAR laser ranging, panoramic image cameras, GPS, and inertial navigation and is capable of gathering 3D point sets on a 360 degree sweep out to 100 meters from the vehicle, accurate to within a few millimeters. The datasets cannot be interpreted or displayed by consumer equipment, but are instead used by manufacturers to add additional layers of information that will then be used as the basis for consumer grade products and services.
And one posted yesterday involved the “Magic Kitchen” – the CABA consortium looking at technologies such as speech recognition and facial recognition. Interview discussed some of the challenges in designing kitchen systems versus the straightforward task of pumping out entertainment. If you watch Eureka and think about the Sarah, the nickname for the kitchen yo uwill see that science fiction is not all that far in the future.
