3G Still Has A Lot of Potential

by Andrew McCaskey
RoadWarrior Patchwork

The next few years will be a patchwork of 3G, enhanced 3G and 4G. This is going to make for some interesting choices and a bag full of tricks to maximize connectivity during travels. I think that the best solution for a road warrior is going to gearing up for a mixture of 3G and 4G and hope that carriers are smart enough to roll out HSPA Plus 3G service in areas where 4G does not make the list. As Clear moves forward in the race against time to build the WiMax network – it is now providing service in about 15 cities, including two of great interest (Chicago and Las Vegas) . The first LTE service won’t be turned up for more than a year by Verizon Wireless. In some places, Comcast seems to be taking the lead, in other locations Sprint is the cheerleader for Clear.

Regardless, the ability to take advantage of WiMax when available is going to be a real advantage in the months to come, and I am looking forward to giving it a try.
