Different Net Neutrality Song

by Andrew McCaskey
Local CWA versus National

The battle lines being drawn between Republicans and Democrats on Net Neutrality are getting fuzzy. Partisans keep slipping from one side to the other, proving once again that “politics makes strange bedfellows” The most recent example is the Communications Workers of America (CWA) who seem to have a split personality, on this issue at least.

At the National level, the CWA has been quite supportive of the FCC’s proposals to assure that ISP’s provide non-discriminatory access. That has not turned out to be the case, once the local lobbyists started to make things felt at the state and local government level for the telco interests. Obviously the threat of non-investment by the established carriers in a given geography points explicitly to whose ox is about to be gored. The CWA locals want none of it.

All this points to the fact that the FCC’s proposal in February is going to have to have a lot of features baked in to keep them on board. It’s worse than figuring out how to insure an aircraft carrier has all 535 Congressional Districts covered.
