Proof Google Has Smart People

Google has some very smart people – politically as well as technically skilled. You need look no further than the announcement of the “Data Liberation Front” .

The newly announced effort is to make sure that users can retrieve their content – be it gmail, blogs, photos, Google Documents or one of scores of other types of content that may have been placed on Google’s cloud. The analogy used was the apartment landlord who allowed you to move out at any time – but stipulated that you had to leave all of your possessions behind . Not only did it make it less likely that someone would move into the apartment, it was far less likely that they would ever move out. The net result is that there was no reason to build innovative new apartments.

As altruistic as all this might sound, it looks to me that Google’s actions are preventative medicine, just one step ahead of an investigation by the Federal Trade Commissions, among others on market power.

Here’s one situation where the likely target is smart enough to listen. Or maybe the Administration is smart enough to know that just floating the idea is sufficient for a target who is smart enough to listen.
