Main Stream Media Stunt – CBS
by Andrew McCaskey
The Chip Promo
CBS announced that the September issue of Entertainment Weekly will include an electronic display, memory and battery with 65 minutes worth of battery life and 45 minutes worth of CBS television content for the upcoming CBS broadcast television season
The exec who announced this was pretty impressed with both the cleverness and the technology. He proudly said that
“The evolution of marketing television in the fall–it used to be as simple as this,” Schweitzer said, holding up a vintage copy of TV Guide.
“It was axiomatic in those days. If you took an ad in TV Guide, people watched your program. Not anymore.”
It sounds like an event that will go down in history. As the single moment that we can point to when mainstream media made the decision to jump the shark. If their programming product is so poor that it can’t attract an audience with normal promotion and the support of enthusiastic fans, it’s doubtful if this very expensive stunt is going to gather much admiration from even the tech early adopter class. And besides, they are not known to be particularly dedicated television viewers at any rate.
