Better Lucky than Smart: HD-DVD

It may be that the Billion dollar bet on HD-DVD taken by Toshiba might not look so bad when things are tallied up in around ten years. There’s news that Blu-Ray’s having trouble gaining traction, and it’s a fact that the Chinese government has just licensed the HD-DVD technology, to be rolled into the Chinese HD-DVD variant, the CBHD standard.
It’s still about 15% fuzzier than Blu-ray, but it’s also about 1/4 the cost to produce. The deal with Toyota puts China in a position where they can produced a very good product, without royalty fees, at a very low price. And $29 players could be on Walmart bound container ships within the year for Christmas 2010. That’s just time enough to get the presses rolling with English language disks, (legal or not).
I doubt that Toshiba had things planned out this way, but as recovering a fumble goes, it’s not bad. And if the game lasts a long time, a sacking in the first quarter can be overcome. {sharethis}
