Office 2010 Will Stumble with Works

    by Andrew McCaskey
    A Fake Out

If the reports are true about Microsoft Office 2010 online offering, it’s going to be a non-starter. Just when we had been able to get Microsoft Works documents out of the system after fifteen years of incompatibility, it looks like it is going to be back again. In addition to requiring Commercial Access Licenses (CAL) a Sharepoint installation is also needed for business use.

Microsoft Works was intended as “Office Lite” – but caused no end of aggravation as crippleware that gave the impression of compatabiltiy but was in fact worthless for any business application. If Office 2010 is not fully compatable with at least office 2003 documents, it is going to be worse than no product at all. It looks like Google, Zoho and others are not going to have anything to fear.
