You Tube Takes Over a Duty of Culture

The shared story telling of network television is in the process of being replaced by something new: the YouTube clip. It is one of the islands in the ‘River of News’ that people notice as they stream by.

Both the Washington Post and Computerworld noted, in separate articles, the fact that – particularly for those under age 30 – there is an emerging trend to cut the cables. Telephone service left the building (literally) at least five years ago. Wired connections were dropped in favor of cellphone, when the radio portion of the wireless network permitted. What’s changed in the past five years – with the penetration of what is more or less wideband to at least 60% of the population – is that there is trend beginning to eliminate the cable television service.

The “Reset Recession” is has driven a lot of video consumption over the broadband, through Netflix on DVD, PS-3 or XBox360. Bittorrent videos – as well as the emerging services from Apple TV, Roku, and the Amazon/TIVO connection. This is particularly true in the same under 30 demographic.

The shared common experience – which has been so much of our cultural experience for the past fifty years is being replaced as well. With distributed workers the chatter around watercoolers (virtual or otherwise) probably relates to some YouTube video posted, Twittered or embedded in a Facebook page.

And thank goodness there is still some common event that allows us to gather, discuss, and perhaps even ponder. ShareThis
