    SDRNews Demographic Transfer

    by Andrew McCaskey
    What SDRNews Does

I’ve finally figured out the concise way to explain what SDRNews provides, thanks to Barrie North’s blog posting and my comments to him. Barrie is the founder of Compass Designs, Inc and is a noted author on the Joomla Content Management System, web design, and SEO techniques. His post was called Why Digg is Useless .

He noted that trying to tailor content for maximum social network ranking could be counterproductive and a waste of time at best. Perhaps he was thinking about those row-up-row of chickets on so many blogs. He concluded with notes that

“. . according to Digg itself, 94% of Digg users are male. 88% of Digg users are in the 18-39 year age range, and 52% of them are “IT professionals, developers, or engineers.” That’s a very narrow demographic. Unless you have a blog that is targeted at this demographic, none of the ensuing traffic you might get will do much good anyway. It’s unfocussed, untargeted, and will not convert very well. ”

My comments to him clicked :

This is my fifth year condensing content from sites like Slashdot, Digg and Reddit into a daily audio podcast news program. The heavy lifting is filtering a news stream from one demographic for consumption by another demographic and changing delivery modes from screen to audio. The shear volume of many hundreds of articles submitted swamps good content with “Ford vs Chevy”, pop culture, did too / did not politics and similar topics.

So, in a nutshell that’s it: Taking the information stream of one demographic, then editing, filtering and presenting it for another demographic. Seems simple, now that someone has explained it to me.

    I feel much better now.
