Media Reversal – Local and Worldwide

About fifteen years ago, Nicholas Negroponte at MIT spoke of a coming reversal in communications: All that was wired (at that time, primarily telephone and computers) would become wireless, and all that was wireless (television) would become wired. To a large measure, that reversal has occurred.
A similar revolution in media is underway, as pointed out by Computerworld. When you can listen to any station in the country on your iPhone. (or any country in the world) what’s the value add ? The only value add is local news, with a worldwide audience that is, for some reason interested in those local happenings at that moment.
Enter Twitter as the realtime intelligence or hive mind that steers this aggregation- and you have the beginnings of the delivery and collection system of the future. In primative system that we now have – #hashtags for a given locale or event – we can already see the replacement for the local newspaper or broadcast.
It’s a Brave New World, indeed. What vets this information ? Maybe there’s a role for a Digg filter in this mix. What used to be called an editor, and what used to take some content and put it in the desk drawer overnight before the decision to publish was made. It will be missed.
