All the Same – Choose Your Currency

Harry McCracken at Technologizer missed the point in his excellent comparison article Hey, Lauren! Is Apple’s 17-Inch MacBook Pro Expensive?

It’s not the hardware, it’s the time.

There had been a minor firestorm running through blog bandwidth the past few weeks, fueled by Steve Ballmer’s notion that the Apple MacBook is a $500 laptop with a $500 logo.Harry’s approach was to take the Macbook Pro, and then add in equivalent capability options to bring HP and Dell machines to parity – and then look at the hardware cost.

I think that’s misleading, and in most cases irrelevant. Based on a mix of HP, Dell, Toshiba, Acer and Apple machines that I have owned – the more relevant question relates to total cost of ownership measured in hardware, software, and most importantly, time. On that axis, the MacBook Pro has been a clear winner.

On hardware costs, the Mac is salty, no doubt. But in the time required to police up the various Zone Alarm, update reboots, virus definitions, malware definitions, forced reboots and general aggravation each day kills a good hour a week. Figure out the value of 100 hours. ShareThis
