    Edge of Space

    by Andrew McCaskey
    Missing Forty Years

Sixty years ago the first V2 flight into what is now defined as Outer Space was launched from the White Sands Missile Range, WSMR. Only twenty years and six months later, Man had walked on the moon. What is striking about the anniversary is the speed with which that beginning in 1949 was turned into one of the greatest achievements in flight. Then the long sleep began.

The advancing Allied troops in WW2 were in a race to Berlin, and at the same time Dr Werner Von Braun and his team were in a race to be captured by the Americans instead of being captured by the Soviets. Those fortunes of war, and the capture of hundreds of V2 rockets in various stages of manufacturing were the incredible foundation that the US Space program enjoyed throughout the 1950′s and 1960′s. What is striking is the willingness with which we relinquished the initiative after the moon landing in 1969.

The missing forty years of bureaucracy, politics and delay have taken their toll. The collective levels of knowledge and skill under the Shuttle program have almost become the living parody comparing a twenty year career and a two year career repeated ten times. Let’s hope that the next twenty years, with the Space-X prize and a new found respect for science might shake us out of our sleep.
