    Plug-In Servers

    Modest Game Changers

The newest Marvell servers, consuming only five watts of power, but offering a fully capable system (SoC with a 1200 MHz CPU, built-in 512 MB Flash, 512 MB DRAM, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0 support) are the beginning of the next generation of computing applications. You could call it the personal cloud.

During our latest TechPodcastNetwork Roundtable Feb 21, Dan Putterman , Company founder at Cloud Engines, Inc and developer of the Pogoplug brought us up to date on some of the capabilities of the units. In an even more exciting perspective on the Marvell units, there have been multiple articles that have cited the open nature of the Developer’s kit from Marvell.

Anytime a platform is promoted widely in an open manner, allowing for value add from companies like PogoPlug, you can bet that there will be applications that have been previously unimagined. And, with a common platform and economies of scale (Marvell claims that a $50 price point is the target), you can bet that developers are focusing on this box with great enthusiasm.

Is this a disruptive technology ? Potentially, yes in the areas of media management and energy monitoring. Both are going to be hot topics in the next five years, and established players such as HP and Dell are not going to be able to move to the bottom of this market any time soon.
