Detectors at the Ready – Stimulus Scammers
by Andrew McCaskey
Let the Games Begin
The Malware article today (injecting data into the victim’s HOSTS file, and sending them off to fake product reviews encouraging loading more malware) is just the latest in the overall blast of technology entrepreneurs, opportunists, and bottom feeders that are coming out of the woodwork.
Earlier today, like a moth to a flame, I had to click on a site (an Adsense link at the top of Gmail) to something like ToddsGrantsBlog. On first reading, it was a Texas volunteer firefighter’s personal blog – except that, since the stimulus package has been passed, he is celebrating his good fortune in cashing a $12,500 check that was a government grant. It arrived in only two weeks – some very auspicious timing in that they must have sent the check out before the bill was signed into law, hoping to beat the rush.
I was re-assured by the photo of the celebration dinner that he and his wife enjoyed at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Manhattan.
For only $2.95, he would rush the details to you. As, had many of those who were commenting on the blog post – complaining that it had taken almost three weeks for their check to come in the mail, but that their check had been for $17,000 so the guessed the extra delay was ok.
From $2.95 scams to $6000 IT Training packages in only six weeks – fast becoming a worker “re-training” boom here in the midwest, we are only beginning to see the start of a long string of these guys. Online, and in person.
