    The Winning Number at CES

    by Andrew McCaskey
CES2009 is history, and it is time to pack up and get back to the real world. There’s probably a reason why CNN mysteriously disappears from my cable TV in the hotel – when in Vegas, for business or pleasure it’s best not to get too much news from the outside.

Now that the CES show is finished, it’s time to flip through channels, and take a look at the mostly likely scenarios for the rest of 2009. Here’s what I see:

When you can be immersed in the latest Consumer Electronics offerings for close to a week and come away with one CE purchase decision – one that is less than $100- it’s an indication that you are either cheap or distracted. If you’ve followed the TPN CES coverage, you know that only one product – the PogoPlug network disk extender – has combined compelling and affordable into action.

Early in the week, there seemed to be the recurrent price point at $199. Companies that have hit the $199 price point will have a chance at the consumer dollar and that beyond that, it is going to be tough sledding. The US consumer is going to be skeptical at best.

Certain highly leveraged services and products are going to be solid for 2009. The Netflix/Roku combination of $9 a month and a $100 setop box and music subscription services from Rhapsody or the Zune will keep families economically entertained.

Business wise, unless there is a clear productivity advantage, it’s the same story. Clearwire is close to making it over the chasm in the Wimax rollout, if they can move within two years, on the strength of performance advantages and Intel muscle.

Regulators: One word – Don’t throw sand in the gears on bandwidth or internet access, or this train Will jump the track.
