    Durable Social Engineering

    by Andrew McCaskey
Can’t Beat It – Human Behavior

The new Facebook virus has as social engineering as it’s primary vector of transmission. And, Twitterspam proves that the Fast Buck artists are not far behind the early adopters in any facet of life.

The progression from clicking of email attachments to offering downloads of “enhanced codecs” to view a video did not take long. And,it did not take long for people to catch on to the fact that it was – especially on a Windows machine – not a good idea, no matter how tantalizing. The latest social network twist, however, is a direct consequence of extension beyond true social neworks where there is some real-world relationship that is extended online to a virtual only relationship. The problem is, they are intermixed.

The virus in question is spreading through postings on Facebook walls, ostensibly from ‘friends’, with the human curiosity magnet “this has got to be you in this video”. A quick click to view the video, the old “special codec”trick (now labeled as an “Adobe Upgrade needed to view the video”, and your system is infected and ready to move in line as a faithful bot or worse.

One of the best educational backgrounds for coping with the online world is a good liberal arts education: Major in Psychology and a Minor in Economics. You certainly have a grand scale laboratory for your experiments.
