Simulation and Modeling are much on the minds of at least two groups of people: Researchers at Virginia Tech and Microsoft. Add in one other story we have covered and it gets scary. Fast.
Here’s the summary: One project (Virginia Tech Simulation) simulates the real world from the quantative and geospatial data, infering trends and movement. This supercomputer project, is based upon combining census data along with commercial database information from Naviteq to infer the employment, travel, movement and interactions of the population of the United Staes. Fake placeholder people, but real addresses, geography and census data.
The other initiative at Microsoft- a 3D photosynth generated on-line reality , gathers information on the appearance and geospatial attributes of the environment. Combine the two, and the invasion of privacy potential is awesome.
Add in the realtime monitoring that may be a reality – facilitiated by the NSA facility allegedly co-linked with Microsoft’s Data Center in Austin, (See the Panopticon Economy) and the Minority Report style predictive crime enforcement vision comes close to reality.
And that is one of the better outcomes.
