Look! There’s A Rabbit from the Telecoms
by Andrew McCaskey
Big Telecom Takes A Page from RIAA
One of the best ways to defend your poor position is distraction. And that’s what it looks like to me is happening in the Anti-Net Neutrality camp’s release that “Google Isn’t Paying Fair” for the bandwidth that they consume.
The argument is that Google consumes “21 times the bandwidth that they pay for” and therefore is the cause of the lack of investment by local telco’s in higher speed infrastructure, and the reason that individual consumer internet access charges are so high. The only problem is that it’s a total apples to oranges comparison: I feel sure that Google is pretty good at buying bandwidth at wholesale backbone rates, as opposed to the pipes that consumers might ever have any need for.
Maybe it’s like the RIAA that is blaming the failure of their business model on pirated downloads, file sharing, and mobile players. It looks to me like the failure of a “walled garden” consumer delivery, under the control of a Verizon or Qwest is the real issue. Instead of focusing on their own business model for value add, — “Look There’s A Rabbit ! Google runs by providing some services (like easy to use email, expansion to VoIP) that could have been offered by the very voices complaining the loudest.
