Blackberry for Obama
by Andrew McCaskey
Addicted, Yes. Also Essential
Classic signs of Blackberry addiction include:
* Wearing the Blackberry on the belt for ready access
* Excellent thumb typing skills
* Checking email during meetings
* Checking news and sports scores while talking
* Checking the Blackberry immediately on entering a vehicle
* Ability to tell news to others who are briefing you.
Apparently, President-Elect Obama approaches world class records in each of these categories, having been a Blackberry user before he was in the US Senate, and relying on the Blackberry so much during the campaign that during important meetings his campaign director would ask the Senator to put his Blackberry in the center of the table.
The news has been that he will relinquish his Blackberry when he is sworn in, due to National Security and historical records laws that require all communications through official channels that are recorded for future generations.
Newsweek says this is rubbish, and recommends that Obama’s first official act would be to keep his Blackberry: a signal of change, and indication that he’s anxious to keep in touch with what the public at large is hearing, reading, and discussing. The security issue can be dealt with, and he’s probably not going to be using the Blackberry for personal calls.
If soon-to-be President Obama is an example to young people around the world politically, imagine the example he could give in not only talking about technology, but using it in a credible way.
