Broadband Over Powerline
by Andrew McCaskey
Why Does This Thing Keeping Coming Back ?
Om Malik compares Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) with cockroaches. Both are equally desirable Yet despite trials and failure in both Virginia and Michigan, IBM has now accepted almost $10M for a study that could result in construction of $70M BPL trials in several states, eventually serving 340,000 homes.
If you could call 256kb/s Broadband and if you could get past the destructive effect that it has on amateur radio emergency communications – it still is a technology that Google has tried and ignored. It’s still a technology that even the companies backing the proposal in Manassas VA decided to withdraw, and concentrate on remote device control.
The FCC bears some culpability, having been an enthusiastic backer of the technology since the days when Michael Powell was FCC Chairman.
I think there are two reasons: The cost of the project is covered by $70M from the Department of Agriculture – and that is not even rounding error in today’s subsidization world. Secondly, IBM is a services business. If you wanted the study the practicality of Tesla Coils driven by computerized Solar Collectors, IBM would help you study it for $9.6M.
If you were really smart, you would call it Banking Over PowerLine (BPL) and move the decimal two places. On second thought even $7Billion is a footnote. Need another zero. Is IBM up to the task ?
