And we should not have done so, even if the “Join the Social” ad campaign seemed more than a bit contrived. They may be on to something, concerning the social role of music in the 14-35 demographic. Or, Motorola may have decided to drink the KoolAid, and it’s all a fabrication.
Both companies seem to have made some big bets on behavior that relates to the role of social networks such as Facebook and MySpace, according to Business Week. Over 300 developers are said to be working on an Android based handset for Motorola, and the news is that the social network aspects of the device are receiving serious attention and resources. According to the article , less than 2% of the handsets today have features that target location awareness and social implications of nearby friends. By 2012, close to 1 in 4 will have social aspects as an important component of the mobile device.
It’s clear that from phone through Texting, the use model is morphing – and both service providers and manufacturers are going to have to cope.
