    NPR and the Twitter Experiment

    by Andrew McCaskey
The Town Meeting debate is host to an experiment proposed by Andy Carvin of NPR – replicating the minute by minute realtime voter opinion engine (the CNN Opinion Dial) in Twitter.

Except that instead of eighty people in the audience, there could be potentially thousands of listeners actively participating in the coverage of the town-hall-meeting debate. Reported realtime.

Around 10:00am Eastern time, Andy tweeted the concept out and I tweeted right back – probably along with a few dozen others. And the question was (and is) what could be created, publicized, coded and tested within ten hours of the event ? Apparently a lot. By 2:00 pm there were test messages flying, a syntax for messages had been specified, and real-time plotting had been set up at Plodt.com

The details are emerging. And NPR listeners will be able to follow along and participate directly – or viewers of the television portion of the debate.

I’m going to participate in the experiment because it’s going to be interesting, entertaining and probably not too valuable – because of the large imbalance of the the technical population. But that is this time.

Next time ? Look out. Have the participants self identify as McCain supporters, Obama Supporters, or Undecided, with a syntax like *M=55*, *O=55* or *U=55* and you will have immediate feedback – by position.

And that is going to be really interesting to watch.

Brought to you in part, by Twitter and your local involved viewer.

Now THAT is TV worth watching.
