    HD Radio Suspicions

    by Andrew McCaskey
The price that was paid by XM-Sirius was to promise to open up the receivers. And, that response was the anti-monopoly cover that was a partial reason that the FCC permitted the merger of the two struggling satellite radio providers. Not only were the receivers to cover the XM and Sirius channels, but added to the mix were mandatory channels for minority broadcasters, iPod interfaces. What was left out was a specific brand of open access: Ibiquity.

The newest pressure by three US Senators (who happen to have Ibiquity and their largest customer, Clear Channel in their states). relates to a requirement that these new receivers also be able to receive the specific digital content with the iBiquity decoders that are “HD-Radio” in major markets. The reasoning is that “has underscored the importance of ensuring consumer access to a diversity of sources for digital radio content, in particular content originating in their local communities.” .

Each year we have covered the CES show, we have had to seek out the HD-Radio section. But we have never found it crowded. Not exactly a solution looking for a problem (from a consumers’s standpoint) but with lots of investment waiting on a return, a problem waiting for solution.
