We Know but We Still Buy

Cory Doctrow (Boing-Boing) points out that there are some unintended consequences in purchase of content with Digital Rights Management (DRM). Like what happens when the DRM administrator either goes out of business or decides to discontinue a business model of support for DRM’d media.
Case in point – Wal-Mart is discontinuing support for the media with “Plays for Sure” DRM on October 9th. About ten days remain for you to back off that content to physical CD’s, rip to mp3 and bring back into a non-DRM’d player. That’s not a big task for the technically inclined – but you have to wonder how many WalMart customers follow the tech news and recognize the fact that those music tracks and albums will no longer function after that date.
Of course, this applies only if you took the high road, purchased the music at WalMart and have the DRM encumbered versions. If you pirated them through some peer to peer system or ripped them from CD’s from the library, you are ok.
He also makes the point that we assume that some other big names won’t take the Walmart step
. “So go on buying your Audible books, your iTunes DRM songs, your Zune media, your EA games… None of these companies will ever disappear”
Especially on iTunes, the content selection and convenience for media content can’t be beat. Just like fast food, we’ll go on saying “Super-size Me” in media, and discount the risk of a coronary. We know, but we keep on buying.
